How to Estimate Fence Posts Per Acre
Simple formulas and a ready reckoner for common Indian farm sizes, plus the extras estimators always forget.

The formula
posts = (perimeter in feet / spacing in feet) + 1 per corner + 2 per gate + 3% wastageOne acre is 43,560 sq ft. A perfect square acre has a perimeter of about 835 ft. Real plots are rarely square, so always measure rather than assume.

What estimators forget
- Gate openings need two heavier posts each, not one.
- Every direction change needs a strainer, not a line post.
- Slopes increase the true running length over map distance.
- Order 3% extra for driving damage and site losses.
